What is the disadvantage of eMMC?
Internal storage known as eMMC (embedded MultiMediaCard) is made up of a controller and NAND flash memory that is housed on a single integrated circuit. eMMC storage chips are typically built into the motherboard of a device. Slower than alternative technologies:
The fact that eMMC is not the quickest internal storage technology is a significant drawback. While an SSD based on the PCIe NVMe protocol may achieve a read speed of 3500 MB/s, a 512 MB UFS has a sequential read performance of up to 2100 MB/s and a sequential write speed of 410 MB/s. eMMC’s antiquated architecture:
The obsolete architecture of an eMMC is one of the factors contributing to its slower performance when compared to other storage technologies. To begin with, it often uses less memory gates than solid-state drives when operating. In contrast to an SSD, it also uses a single lane in each direction. This implies that while it might theoretically be able to match the data transfer rates of a SATA-based SSD, it is limited in terms of space. A single lane that allows only one direction at a time moves fewer bits of data than numerous lanes that enable multiple directions.
Note: Internal Storage That Is Easily Upgradeable:
An Embedded MultiMediaCard’s inability to be upgraded is another disadvantage. This type of internal storage cannot be easily upgraded in laptops. An eMMC is soldered on the motherboard, as opposed to M.2 SSDs, which may be easily detached and swapped. Of course, it may be taken out and changed using a heat gun and a soldering iron, but doing so safely takes technical know-how. Hardware components can be harmed by prolonged exposure to heat.
