Can you upgrade a laptop’s RAM without replacing its hard drive?

Increasing the RAM on your computer may help if your older laptop feels sluggish or if your newer system becomes unresponsive when there are too many tabs open. Insufficient physical memory causes your computer to begin swapping data to your hard drive or SSD, which is a much slower operation (even with the slowest of RAM chips). Many contemporary laptops offer a mechanism to update your memory, even though not all of them give you access to the RAM. Hence ICFix Service provides Laptop repair courses in Chennai.

  1. Determine your RAM usage:

On any given computer, low memory is a common bottleneck that can result in unstable operation in addition to slow performance. More RAM will probably make your system function more smoothly if you’re a power user who multitasks between many resource-intensive programs or runs about 30 active browser tabs at once.

Windows Task Manager allows you to monitor the memory use on your laptop. Simply pick Task Manager by right-clicking on the taskbar. Then, check the performance tab of Task Manager to see how much of the available memory is being used. You’ll also be able to view how many actual memory slots are being used, as well as how many are left over for future memory expansion.

By selecting the “Open Resource Monitor” button at the bottom of the Task Manager window and selecting the Memory tab, you’ll receive an even more thorough picture. Note: Under Windows 7, the screens will appear somewhat different.

  1. Determine whether you can upgrade:

Unfortunately, you cannot upgrade the RAM in many laptops because they have sealed bottoms or memory that is soldered to the motherboard. (It’s also possible that the system only recognizes RAM up to a certain threshold.) Try Crucial’s Memory Advisor to see if you can update your RAM (opens in a new tab). You should see a screen that displays the maximum amount of memory and how many slots your laptop has after inputting the brand and precise model.

You may get RAM modules for your laptop from Crucial as well. However, other brands also sell comparable DIMMs. Take note of the RAM type and speed you require, which is typically DDR2, DDR3, or DDR4 with a specific speed next to it.

  1. Locate the memory banks by opening the panel:

Now that you have more memory, it’s time to increase the memory in your laptop, which is a rather simple procedure. Start by shutting off your laptop and removing the power cord.

Open the panel that covers the memory banks on the bottom of your laptop next. To access the RAM and other components, you might need to unscrew the entire rear of the laptop (depending on your system).

  1. Ground yourself to prevent eddy currents:

However, make sure to contact any metal surfaces within the computer before you touch any components (e.g., the back of the hard drive or a metal connector for another component). Any potentially harmful static energy will be released from your body as a result.

  1. Eliminate memory if needed:

You will need to remove the current DIMMs in order to install new ones if all of your memory slots have previously been used. Push the clamps holding the memory module in place apart to remove it. The memory module should tilt upward.

The memory module should then be lifted out while being held by its edges, keeping your fingers away from the gold connectors at the bottom.

  1. Put the fresh memory module in(s) :

The new modules should then be inserted into the available slots at a 45-degree angle with the gold edges facing down. Push the modules into position by applying even pressure with your fingertips at the top of the modules. When a DIMM clicks into position and you feel it snap into place, press the module back forcefully until it is installed flat, level, and the clips are firmly holding it in place.

I’m done now! After turning on your laptop, check to see if your new RAM has been added to the System Information window or Task Manager. Embrace your improved memory.
