The steps for repairing circuit boards are as follows:
- Compile the necessary tools and materials:
It’s important to gather all of the supplies and tools you’ll need before beginning your repair. By doing this, delays will be avoided and the process will move along more quickly. Most fixes require the following:
- Rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab
- An airbrush
- Tweezers, a flathead screwdriver, a sharp knife, or sandpaper
- Copper adhesive tape
- welding iron
- Pen, paperclip, scissors, or a craft knife
Once you have everything you need, you may begin the repair procedure.
- Remove the harmed component or pad:
Most repairs start with removing the damaged pad or component. How to do it:
- Before desoldering any remaining joints, take the component off the PCB using a flathead screwdriver or a sharp knife.
- Sandpaper should be used to remove any extra solder or dirt if the pad is damaged.
- Remove the solder and clean the track:
After removing the defective part or pad, you must clean the track. This will make it more likely that the replacement part or pad will stick properly and form a solid connection.
Cleaning the track:
- Rubbish alcohol on a cotton swab will help you clean any residue from the track.
- Any broken pieces of the track should be carefully removed using a craft knife or pair of scissors.
- To know where to position the new component or pad, use your pen to mark the end of the cut track.
- Wrap the track in your copper tape:
You’ll need to apply your copper tape on the track after it has been well-cleaned. The new component or pad will benefit from a solid connection as a result. Place a copper tape cover over the track by cutting a piece slightly longer than the track. Ensure that the tape’s ends are flush with the PCB’s edges.
- Solder the Joints:
You must solder the joints after applying the copper tape. The pads on either side of the new track will become permanently connected as a result of this. How to do it:
- One of the pads should be soldered with a modest amount and heated with a soldering gun until the solder melts.
- Until the solder cools and creates a bond, touch the soldering gun’s tip to the copper tape and keep it there.
- On the other pad, repeat these steps.
- Restore the PCB Through-Hole:
Before soldering the replacement component into place, you must restore any through-holes that are part of the repair. First, clear the through-hole of any debris with a sharp knife before cleaning it with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol. Next, enlarge the hole with a paper clip until it is the same size as the component lead.
- Position your component and solder it:
You can now install your new component and solder the repaired track back together. Flip the PCB over after carefully inserting the new component’s lead into the through-hole.
Next, use a soldering gun to heat a small amount of solder that has been applied to one of the pads until the solder melts. Then, until the solder cools and creates a link, contact the soldering gun’s tip to the lead and hold it there. On the other pad, repeat these steps.
- Cut Off Extra Tape Around the Repaired Area:
Trim any extra tape from the repair area once your new component is in place. A pair of scissors or a craft knife can be used to gently remove any extra tape. Be careful not to cut any of the pads or tracks.
